I enjoy the texture and pattern that is an integral part of our world, in nature architecture and agriculture, and incorporate it in my work. Born in 1968, matriculated in 1986 and completed a BA Fine Art degree at UCT in 1990. During time spent in Europe in 1991 and again in 1994, I had the opportunity of living and working with a community of Brothers dedicated to achieving reconciliation between people (While W-Europe was dealing with the influx from the East as well as war in Yugoslavia, South Africans were attempting to embrace a bright future, but reconciliation was a painful theme for many).
I realized the need for inner ‘silence’ or ‘centeredness’ to be able to really be present for others – painting is like meditation, where I can find pause from the hectic pace of daily life. I was involved with the management of the family picture-framing business from 1992 – 2005 during which time I organized and participated in several group exhibitions and promoted local ceramics in our small gallery. I also sold some work through Hout Bay Gallery (incl. group show 2001), Infin Art and Galerie de Lyons during this period. In 2003 I took a stand at Decorex Cape – the 1st trade show to open in the new Convention Centre in Cape Town. My paintings sold and the other ‘products’ that I produced led to orders and a steep learning curve! – I still produce some small items that link to my painting process. In 2006 I was able to begin to concentrate solely on my painting and exhibited a selection of work, mostly Landscapes at Anura Vineyards in June and then at Scarlett Gallery in Greyton in September. In November I opened my studio for the first time for an exhibition – which went very well. I share a love of the outdoors with my husband and we travel on the West Coast, Garden Route, Cedarberg and Route 62 frequently. My landscapes are drawn from these incredible journeys. My water paintings involve a kind of soul searching as I’m drawn into deliberation over surface, depth, reflected light, transparency and so on…
The introduction of koi into some of these adds a separate element of movement, and perhaps a more light hearted touch, with the introduction of strong complimentary colour I have work in private and corporate collections in SA, UK, Germany, Holland, Kenya and the UAE…so far
